Impasto: Texture as a Language in Oil Art

October 20, 2026 0 By taobao

Impasto means applying thick oil paint directly onto canvas. The brush or palette knife leaves visible ridges, peaks, and grooves on the surface. When light hits these raised marks, shadows form naturally, adding dramatic texture. Van Gogh is the most famous impasto artist; his swirling skies and cypress trees use heavy paint to show raw emotion.

Impasto is not only decorative. The texture itself tells the story. Rough, jagged strokes can show storm, anger or struggle. Gentle thick marks may represent soft grass or flower clusters. Artists use palette knives for bold, flat impasto, while brushes create finer textured lines. One downside: thick paint takes much longer to dry. Collectors must be careful not to scratch raised impasto surfaces during handling and framing.
